Game Protest

Game Protests

A protest is a formal written objection regarding violation of published rules or procedures.

Protest Requirements

To be valid, a protest must:

  1. Be verbally communicated with the referee or site manager and opposing coach before, during or by final whistle
  2. Be noted on the match report
  3. Be submitted in writing within 72 hours of match completion to the SLYSA Office at slysa@slysa.org
  4. Be filed by the participating Head Coach, or Club Director to SLYSA

Protest Must Include

  • All game information
  • Nature of protest
  • Rule/policy violated (Illegal player or coach)
  • Supporting documents
  • Filing fee of $100 within one week of protest to SLYSA Office

Protest Decisions

  • Determined by SLYSA Competition Commissioner and League Scheduler(s)
  • Decision is final and not appealable
  • Filing fee refunded only if protest is upheld
  • Result amended to 2–0 for any protest upheld

Only issues pertaining to game administration may be protested, including but not limited to:

  • Use of an illegal/ineligible player or coach

No other matters may be protested unless specifically permitted by SLYSA rules.

Non-protestable Matters

The following may NOT be protested:

  • Referee judgment decisions involving application of the FIFA Laws of the Game or SLYSA-modified Laws of the Game
  • Yellow cards issued to players
  • Red cards issued to players
  • Red cards issued to coaches

Protest Fee

  • Protest fee must be paid within one (1) week of filing the protest.
  • Fee will be refunded if the protest is upheld.
  • Fee is non-refundable if protest is denied.

Who May File a Protest

Only the following may file a protest:

  • Head Coach of a team involved in the match
  • Listed Team Administrator of a team involved in the match

Third parties may NOT file protests, including:

  • Coaches from other teams
  • Administrators from other teams
  • Spectators or parents
